On the Atlantic coast of the USA, there was Ellis Island, which processed 12 million immigrants in its 62 years of operation (1892 to 1954). On the Pacific coast, there was Angel Island, which served as the “Guardian of the Western Gate” for approximately one million immigrants between 1910 and 1940.
